Sawgrass Orthodontics is your Plantation braces expert
The team at Sawgrass Orthodontics is here for you if you're looking for someone you can trust to provide a brilliant straight smile in the Plantation area. We proudly create beautiful new smiles for patients of all ages in Plantation, Sunrise, and surrounding communities.
Traditional braces are one of the most effective tools we have for achieving optimal tooth and jaw alignment, and we're proud to offer patients a variety of orthodontic options, including traditional metal braces and ceramic braces. If you are still deciding between braces and clear aligners, your Plantation orthodontist can walk you through both at a free consultation.
Braces treatment with your Plantation braces experts
We will collect digital x-rays, photos, and a model of your mouth before we put your braces on. Our orthodontists, Dr. Kristen Igualada-Heine and Dr. Penelope Reingowsky (known as Dr. Penny by her patients) will then use this data to formulate a customized treatment plan based on your particular orthodontic needs. This includes information about how each tooth needs to move to achieve its best position, which determines how we place your braces.
Wire is inserted after the brackets have been attached to provide customized pressure on all the teeth that need to be moved. Through a process called remodeling, bends in the wire encourage specific and precise tooth movement. This process involves minor changes in the bone that surrounds the roots of your teeth. When your braces put pressure on a tooth, cells called osteoblasts and osteoclasts form around the root. Together with the wire, this creates negative pressure on one side of the tooth, where bone is removed. On the other side of the tooth, the bone is reformed. This pressure and bone remodeling slowly moves teeth into the correct position.
Remodeling requires constant pressure to be put on a tooth. This means teeth will often begin drifting back towards their old positions over time after your braces have been taken off. Fortunately, regular use of a retainer will help prevent this natural drifting and keep your teeth in their new and improved positions.

What your Plantation braces offer
All of our treatment options can correct a variety of simple and complex oral problems, and today's braces are better than ever. Traditional metal braces often work faster at closing gaps and aligning teeth than other treatments might, which can shorten your overall treatment time. The strength and durability of traditional braces are a big part of why they have withstood the test of time and are still the most common orthodontic treatment year after year.
Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most common type used because they have been proven with decades of successful smiles. These are normally constructed from high-grade stainless steel, and they straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. Today's metal braces are more comfortable and more fun than ever. You have the option of choosing colored elastics to add a splash of personality to your treatment. If you prefer a more subtle approach, we also offer clear or tooth-colored elastics.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces work the same way metal braces do, but the brackets are made with a clear ceramic material instead. They are another great option for straightening your teeth, and they are very popular with our older teen and adult patients because they are such a discreet treatment option. Since the brackets tend to be a bit larger and more brittle than their metal counterparts, we normally will not recommend them for our younger patients. Ceramic braces tend to be used on the upper front teeth more often than the lower teeth.
With traditional braces you can often see visible signs of improvement relatively quickly, which helps build your confidence in both your smile and the orthodontic process.
